How to Understand Your Audience with Data Collection & Analysis

The Internet is a fast environment. People can come to your site at any time from a wide range of locations, each with different intentions or needs. Unlike the physical stores, you can not see that coming and browsing around. You do not know much about the people who read. How can we develop a profile of about all these people?

You already get a vision of everyday life as they interact with your site. Some may register for an account, please leave a comment or send an e-mail. However, many of them are "invisible". They arrive at your site, see what you put out, click on a link out and disappear.

What we now know about these people come from a combination of visible user actions (for example, comments and e-mail messages) and statistics (eg, frequency of visit / visit length). Is this the knowledge to most businesses or bloggers? Yes. But I think it would be tremendously helpful to learn even more about their audience.

Statistical Analysis: Start Working With What You Already Have

There are obviously a lot of different parameters to analyze but I list what I believe is most relevant for the understanding of visitors in general:

1. Visitor loyalty, the percentage of dropouts, the last time on the site. These sites measure a fundamental thing: the level of commitment. They reveal how often they visit your site, the last time you used it and the depth of his visit. While these figures are not definitive interpretation on the ground user actions are an indicator of their enthusiasm.

2. Location of the visitor. This allows you to make cultural and linguistic assumptions of its visitors. If you know you receive the most visitors from some countries, you may want to create pages / content offerings or with a geographical focus.

3. Visitor search terms or keywords. This includes both search engines and site search boxes. The clearest indicator of interest from visitors, search terms say what they want to get your site and highlighting gaps in information that can fill. This is where the data collection itself. If you consistently get a lot of questions for a specific phrase, you can safely assume that there will be interest from visitors as to its content or offers related to it.

4. Traffic source. This includes search engines, reference sites, type-in/bookmark traffic and advertising campaigns. Pay attention to the sites of reference: This indicates that visitors are reading or using. Traffic Sources also say that to improve for greater visibility.

Take the time to look at these statistics. Instead of looking only at each of them at one point in time, it makes more sense to study periodically to see how the trend in the life of your site or during a marketing / advertising campaign. In general, who will give you a good idea of what users want and what it calls your attention.
